Early Life

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, near Hodgenville, Kentucky. His family was poor and he had very little formal education, only attending school for less than a year. Lincoln's mother died when he was just nine years old and his father remarried. Despite these early hardships, Lincoln was a voracious reader and taught himself through books and anything he could get his hands on.

Political Beginnings

In 1832, Lincoln began his political career, campaigning for the Illinois General Assembly. He lost that election, but won the next one in 1834. After several terms in the Illinois legislature, he began to gain a reputation as a skilled lawyer and orator. It was during this time that he earned the nickname "Honest Abe."

The Civil War

By 1860, the United States was on the brink of civil war over the issue of slavery. Lincoln was a vocal opponent of slavery and in 1861, he became the president of a country that was divided over the issue. The Civil War lasted from 1861-1865 and was the bloodiest conflict in American history. Lincoln is remembered for his leadership during the war, as he navigated the country through a tumultuous time.

The Emancipation Proclamation

In 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that all slaves in the Confederate states "shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free." Although it didn't immediately free all slaves, it was a turning point in the war and the fight against slavery.

Assassination

On April 14, 1865, just days after the Civil War ended, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. His death was a shock to the entire country and he is remembered as one of the greatest American presidents.

Legacy

Lincoln's legacy lives on today, not just in the United States, but around the world. He is remembered for his leadership during the Civil War and his commitment to democracy and equality. Lincoln serves as an inspiration to many for his dedication to the country and his unwavering moral compass.

Today, visitors can visit numerous memorials and museums dedicated to Lincoln, including the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois.

Overall, Abraham Lincoln's life story is one of resilience, dedication, and commitment to a cause greater than oneself. He remains one of the most prominent figures in American history and his influence can still be felt today.
